The Netherlands has invested in seperate bicycle paths for cyclists, which is the best measure really.

And almost no Dutch cyclists wear helmets, particularly when using those (largely excellent) cycle paths. Whereas 50% of racing and mountain bikers in the Netherlands do wear helmets.

When cycling doesn’t involve much risk, Dutch people don’t choose to wear helmets.

Really enjoyed this - it’s a debate which has been done to death, so it’s good to have a good look at the evidence.

My provocation for those who think all those who cycle should wear a helmet at all times is to ask whether we should mandate helmets for car drivers. After all, no racing driver would be allowed to drive without one, would they? So why not all drivers?
