Very informative. Thanks. Would have been nice to give a nod to its origin in Buddhism. We don’t meditate because we think it’s therapeutic as such but because being in the moment gets us away from negative thinking about the past and the future and also our egos. So that benéfits ourselves and others. Its part of a bigger package: the eightfold path. Its totally logical! Take a look! Thanks again !!
Not that Sam Harris needs my defense, but I think you mischaracterize the basis upon which Sam advocates (evangelizes?) on behalf of mindfulness meditation. He rarely, if ever, makes scientific claims about meditation. Rather, as I understand his position, mindfulness is a tool for seeing oneself and the world clearly. It's a truth-seeking about oneself and about one's mind. In short, it's philosophy more than science. I subscribe to his app Waking Up which probably hosts content by others who cite scientific support for this or that aspect of mindfulness meditation. I can't speak to those. Having said all that, I don't disagree with your upshot about the science. Cheers!
Thanks for this one! I’m a Sam Harris subscriber but this is an area I just don’t see eye to eye with him. I gave it a go but it didn’t do anything for me and I guess I don’t feel like I need it to do anything for me.
The criticism of the MYRIAD study for ‘wasting’ money on a null result isn’t just unfair, it’s actively working to create more publication bias.
